Going back to school is more than a little different this year and that means supply lists have changed, too. While the mainstays, including backpacks, pencils and crayons, are still very much in demand, students will need personal safety products as well. These essentials will set students up for a successful academic year and give you peace of mind at the same time.

Stylish masks

Unlike last year, when many activities were restricted, this school year is kicking off with open play areas, fully functioning canteens, physical education classes and extra-curricular activities. Physical distancing has also been scaled down to one meter, enabling increased class sizes. While these are welcome changes, it makes other precautions like mask wearing even more important. Education authorities require that all children wear masks while on school premises, with the exception of kindergarteners and those who cannot wear a mask due to medical conditions.

Consequently, masks are the must-have accessory for every student and there’s no shortage of options. Depending on your child’s preference you can grab a box of simple, disposable versions from Daiso, or help them make the ultimate style statement with a variety of colors and patterns from retailers such as Claire’s and The Gap. Keeping a mask on all day can be a challenge, so comfort is key. Pairing your child’s mask with a mask extender allows you to adjust the fit and relieve pressure behind the ears. A variety of options are available at Amazon. Since this is an all-day endeavor, it’s also a good idea to pack a few extra masks to swap out those that get sweaty, dirty or lost. Sorrel and Spruce, an Abu Dhabi-based service, offers personalized mask pouches as well as mask organizers for the home because, let’s face it, mask management is a thing now.

Hand sanitizer

If there’s one thing living through the Covid-19 pandemic has taught us, it’s how important hand washing is. Hand sanitizer is the best way for kids to keep their hands clean throughout the school day. A small bottle of Dettol can go a long way and the ones that come in plastic keychain carriers can be hung on a backpack for added convenience. Bath & Body Works offers tiny PocketBac sanitizers that come in fun, fresh scents. Moreover, these small containers fit easily into pockets so kids can always have some handy.

Tissues or disinfecting wipes

Send your kid to school with disinfecting wipes or tissues that they can use with a bit of hand sanitizer to wipe down surfaces. Their backpacks, water bottles and pencil cases can also be wiped clean throughout the day. Keep in mind that while arming them to clean their own things is essential, there’s noting like a follow-up from mom or dad. It’s also important to keep the home sanitized and your regular disinfectant may fall short. Zoflora’s 3-in-1 formula, for example, eliminates 99.9 percent of bacteria and viruses while leaving behind a fresh scent. You can grab a bottle wherever household goods are sold and say hello to a hygienic home this school year.
