Do you spend hours on end scrolling through the ‘gram or trying to keep up with too many messages in your group chats? The overwhelming amount of digital media can affect both your mental health and physical health. Whether it’s the pressure to respond in real-time to instant messages, social media posts, or emails, all of us can end up feeling drained and burned out. Digital wellness is definitely thing, and to practice it, and self-care, we occasionally hit that log off button. This afternoon there will be no scrolling, no messaging, and no thumb tapping.

Located in Jumeirah 1, The Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai is one of the best-known hotels in the city. On the ground floor you will find The Spa. Although the menu offers a range of treatments, from Guided Meditation to Smoothing Body Glow, we’re here for the Digital Wellness Escape: a massage focusing on the head, eyes, neck, shoulders, hands, and feet. It’s a restorative treatment that aims to ease stresses and strains resulting from the frequent use of digital devices.

But first a lifestyle consultation form, with several tick-box questions about my daily life and what I hope to achieve (easy: to feel less tired). Once changed into a fluffy robe, we were met by our therapist Grace who led us to the treatment room.

The Digital Wellness Escape begins with a foot bath, which is a peppermint scrub followed by a gentle wash. I was asked choose from three oil blends for the massage portion from The Mandarin Oriental Signature line, which was designed based on the five elements in traditional Chinese medicine: earth, fire, wood, metal, and water. I chose Awaken, a mixture of grapefruit, lavender, and neroli that stimulates circulation and loosens tight muscles and ligaments, particularly in the neck and shoulder area – the areas we tend to strain when overusing our devices.

The Awaken oils also help to detoxify and promote relaxation for the mind and body at the same time. With soothing instrumental sounds in the background and a heated bed, it was tempting to drift off.

Knot-free and mind clearer, two hours later after one of the most relaxing massages I’ve ever had, I’ve also not thought about my phone once. Grace escorts me to the chill-out area, where I’m handed a ginger tea, a delicious granola bar and a delicate mini-bowl of nuts and dates. I also get a Mindfulness Guide and Coloring Book complete with coloring pencils. Three hours down and I’ve still not thought about my phone.

I also walked away with some great digital wellness tips that I hope to implement into my daily routine:

  1. Stop using electronics one hour before bed and instead take a bath or a shower with relaxing essential oils, have a cup of warm camomile tea, or do a short, five-ten-minute breathing and meditation exercise.
  2. Schedule time in the day when all devices are switched off to connect with the real world. Take walks in nature without devices and focus on the sensory elements all around.
  3. Disable all push notifications. Alerts from social media and email interrupt the day, deadlines, and thought processes. Instead, choose the time of day to check messages and be intentional about it.
  4. Go device-free at meals and set meal times as an opportunity to connect with your food, family, friends, and yourself.
  5. Wear a wristwatch so you don’t constantly have to check your phone for the time.

• The Digital Wellness Escape costs AED 950, for 1 hour and 30 minutes. For more information: The Spa, Mandarin Oriental Jumeirah, Jumeirah 1 04 777 2243
