Covid-19: ‘Keep up the preventative measures’

As the UAE gradually returns to something resembling life pre-Covid-19, authorities have warned citizens and residents that this is not the time to let down their guard.

With the country still recording upwards of 300 new cases of Covid-19 daily, government spokesperson Amna Al Dahak Al Shamsi stressed that it was even more important to adhere to safety precautions.

“With a gradual return to normality, the responsibility is now more on UAE citizens and residents to comply with the instructions and measures aimed at ensuring the continued success of all the efforts made.” she told a regular daily briefing at the weekend.

The national disinfection program, which had kept residents indoors between 10pm and 6am ended on June 24 but since then there has been a marked increase in the number of people violating protective measures, said Salem Al Zaabi, acting director of the federal emergency, crisis and disasters prosecution.

The violations include going out without a mask, not maintaining the required two-meter distance and organizing gatherings in both public and private places. Even though businesses and public spaces are opening up again, anyone failing to abide by the regulations still face prosecution and fines.

“Such reckless behavior will work against the preventative measures which have been so important in helping to control the spread of the virus,” said Al Zaabi.

Family visits should be confined to first degree relatives (parents, siblings, children) and social distancing maintained at all times, but especially in the presence of the elderly or those with chronic diseases, he added.

Al Shamsi added, “Everyone in the UAE, with the help of the state departments, has to take full responsibility to protect all citizens and residents of the UAE.”
