International Day of Sport: Hope is key

In this exclusive piece for Livehealthy, Lebanon’s five-times tennis champion Sandrine Jabra uses the occasion of the International Day of Sport to write about how hope is the key to overcoming pandemic challenges

We are constrained with socially distanced rules imposed by the pandemic that are keeping us apart from our beloved ones. Like other industries, the sports world has also been in shock for more than a year and organizations are searching for means to keep the ball rolling.

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, coming as uncertainty continues, proves once again the importance of sports in finding a common ground to deal with adversities.

Both the 2020 Summer Olympics and UEFA Euro 2020 are taking place this year. Despite this strange world we are living in, we need to look at the bright side. We are not surrendering to the virus, but finding ways to stand up again after the hit.

While there are still no fans in the stadiums, which is not ideal, these events are promising steps as we slowly go back to ‘normal’.

Right now, the world needs to be united more than ever, and sports has the power to show us the light. It is instrumental in strengthening our social ties in a socially distanced world, promoting equality, crossing boundaries, and defying stereotypes.

Even if we cannot practice some types or forms of sports in groups, we need to find some activities that can be practiced safely.

I have realized the true value of sport and its significance in building resilience during the past year. For instance, watching a football game with family members brings a thrill and joy in the house, as we cheer to our favorite team to win. During these challenging times, following sports on TV allowed us to tune out from negativity while giving us the opportunity to stay fit and safe.

International Day of Sport is a reminder to recognize that while everyone is facing the pandemic differently, the return of sports is making it a little easier for everyone.
